Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
